A Subtle Piercing
Girl with a Pearl Earring
Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, 1632 - 1675)
Let me not live in the eyes of your despair,
Call me not a trophy won nor a possibility courted;
See me not a reflection of your lost eyes and ears,
Let me not remark your façade hollowed,
Drunk on conceit to excuse all as care.
To this day I wonder still,
If sincerity and zeal fault me at your hands,
But become stranger sudden withhold principle and will;
Friends not demand candor nor acknowledgment claim -
Both implicit through time and trust distill.
Oppose not damage done,
The attitude or response you intend;
Only boundaries set and met can undone
That swift imperious motion end,
And inclinations more than blunt.
Perhaps now you think me less,
But even less guides moral compass;
Justify not behaviours digress,
Hover only between self-interest,
But what about her when she undress?
I need not one to make me shine,
Already see brilliance in others’ eyes;
Embellish not for compliments kind,
My own smile dear friends remind,
I need not one to label me fine.
The look I bestow not affection -
Only compassion as reflection;
The garments I don not enticement -
Only expression as temperament;
The lips agape not seduction -
Only sentiments as instruction:
Do not ascribe a story to my eyes -
My story my write.
